I don’t normally talk about things like television but sometimes a show hits me as being so mind numbingly bad that I can’t help but ask, “What the hell were they thinking?!” I was unlucky enough to see a reality TV show called The Millionaire Matchmaker on Bravo and it was beyond horrible; It’s like diarrhea for your eyes.
The premise sounded interesting enough: A show about a matchmaker that only services rich clients but it all goes downhill from there. You see, although the emphasis is supposed to be on finding ideal partners, the matchmaking service itself is a joke. The woman running the service picks women who are shallow, status conscious, elitist, pretty little succubuses for these men to choose from. They are the kind of women that these men don’t need a matchmaking service to meet. All they would have to do is go to the nearest trendy club with a bank receipt to pick up these kinds of chicks.
The woman running the service has all the charm of a rabid hyena and even less tact then one. She even had the audacity to show up at a client’s house and reprimand them for staying in an average house, in an average neighborhood (which she refers to as a ‘ghetto’.) Then tells him that no one would dream of dating a man who was such a cheapskate (even though he also had a few five million dollar condos in the states.)
He is a fool if that didn’t make red flags pop up in every direction. Isn’t the point of a millionaire seeking true love to find a partner who loves them for who they are, rather than what they have amassed? If you need to flaunt your wealth and prestige to attract a person, you are attracting the wrong kind of person. There’s my advice for these gents, now where shall I send them my bill?

Ugh, makes me glad I hardly watch TV! I figure they all deserve what they get, both the gold-diggers and the shallow men who are addicted to arm-candy. Thanks for running my ad.

I hate these types of shows and most reality television in general. There are too many shows like this on television and the ideas are way over-used and abused. I stopped watching most television a couple of years ago and don’t miss it much at all. I have a couple of shows I like to watch and can watch/rent movies whenever I know I’m going to be in and able to watch one. But now that the writer’s strike is over, hopefully the quality of the programs will rise a bit.

We haven’t had that many reality shows over here yet, but they’re coming. I watched the Finnish version of the Bachelor and I was almost dying laughing. The guy seems to be in his late 20’s and is a soccer player, and the girls are most of them young girls just wanting to have fun and get their 15 minutes of fame. My older daughters are the same age as the girls in the show and they were laughing too. My daughters find to idea of the show to be just disgusting. It’s just a meat market where the girls have to look their best to get the rose and nothing more. None of my daughters would want to be part of a show like that.

It is rather unsettling to see such money grabbing. I think people mostly watch things like that to feel better about themselves. I wonder how people get that way and why money has such value in a potential relationship. I can’t imagine thinking that a relationship is a bad idea because somebody doesn’t have the largest house, you know?

In my single days, I saw it from the other side. Gold-diggers grossed me out, so I didn’t even go there. I was steadfast in upholding my own standards, and was duly rewarded. I ended up with the love of my life and a beautiful baby girl.
Men with money behaving badly just reinforces more bad behavior. A jerk with money will still have women (albeit shallow, elitist and status-conscious) flock to them. They’re not encouraged to change their ways. It’s not just the gold-diggers who are [rightfully] vilified here.
I didn’t play their game. I played mine and everybody involved won big.

It is really a sad thing when people, much less millionaires have to go to such extremes to ‘find’ someone! I like your insight and your way of ‘telling it like it is’. Great heads up, I won’t be wasting my time on this show.

They air it because people watch it, and when they stop watching it they will move onto the next thing. It’s showbiz and some people without a smidgen of talent will do anything to be ON a show. Like many others I gave up most tv shows, mostly I rent movies.

I’ve gotten to the point where if it is a “reality show” I immediately think to myself “This should have all the reality of a wrestling arena”.
I agree with you that if one wants to be loved for oneself, they should just find someone that has the same stature as them self.
That or play it like they don’t have a lot of money.
This show sounds like it has all the charm of the original “weakest link”.

I’ll never understand the arm candy thing. I mean if you want to date someone without any commitment that’s one thing but to marry arm candy is just retarded…

Ick. Tell them to keep them away. Reality TV is one of the worst ideas television has come up with.

Money shouldn’t be the largest concern in deciding upon a mate and if it is to a person then they are about as deep as a puddle and not the kind of person anyone with any sense would want to marry.

Gold diggers gross me out too. I don’t understand why anyone would be attracted to someone who is just after their cash like vultures on a body, just yuck!

You would think a Millionare ‘might’ have trouble finding someone who wasn’t after his cash or status and need help in that area but this woman doesn’t even provide that. She seeks out woman who want those things and for the life of me I can’t understand how it’s hard for a man with a boatload of cash to find a pretty girl that’s interested in a boatload of cash. Seems pretty damn simple to me…

It’s more charming, I swear it. You can almost see the sense of entitlement some of those women have just because they have well formed molecules before they even open their mouths. It’s like you can picture them in a tiara and evening gown, waving at all the little people. It’s just all very sad and icky.

Antib, I gotta disagree with you on this one. This is pure fluff baby, and I enjoy every minute of it. Do you really think these guys, who have struck out in love, are going to find true love with this Matchmaker? I don’t.
But I love watching her assess them, find these chicks “who are not gold diggers, we don’t allow gold diggers in this Club” and then throw them together in an awkward stew. You can’t assign normal values to this show because you will be frustrated every time you watch it.
But if you see it as pure entertainment, you’ll be entertained. I find it interesting that she, herself, has been in a relationship for three or four years but is not married. I suppose technically she is in a match, so that counts, but she’s saying she’s going to get them married.

Fluff gives you cavities. I’m not really a person that enjoys empty crap-o-rama. She is gawd awful. Her personality is so abrasive that I can’t imagine anyone sticking around for years with that banshee, I can’t watch her for more than a few minutes without wanting to slap her across the face. The man must be deaf and insane.
